Getting started

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art built on leverage, timing and technique instead of size or strength. Students learn to control a partner, escape bad positions and finish with submissions, which makes it one of the most practical forms of self-defense for kids and adults.

Do you offer a free trial class?

Yes. Your first class at Tetris Jiu-Jitsu is free, for kids and adults. Book a free class online and we’ll text you to set up a day that works.

Do I need experience or to be in shape to start?

No. You don’t need to be in shape, experienced or naturally athletic. You just need to show up. Many of our students started with little or no athletic background, and classes are beginner-friendly, so your fitness builds as you train.

Will I have to spar in my first class?

No. Your first class is a guided warm-up and simple techniques shown step by step, practiced with a friendly partner at your own pace. There’s no pressure to perform and no experience required.

What to wear

What should I wear to my first class?

Comfortable workout clothes, like a T-shirt and athletic shorts or pants without zippers. No uniform is needed for your trial, and loaner uniforms are available. Bring a water bottle and sandals for walking off the mat.

Do I need to buy a gi?

Not to start. Once you join, you’ll train in a gi (the Jiu-Jitsu uniform), and loaner uniforms are available while you get set up.

Kids

How old does my child need to be to start?

Kids can start at age 3. Our kids class is built for ages 3 to 13, and teens 14 and up train in our adult and teen class.

Is Jiu-Jitsu safe for kids?

Yes. Jiu-Jitsu has no punches or kicks, and kids learn control first. Classes are structured, with age-appropriate techniques and close supervision from coaches the whole time.

Can my family train together?

Yes, and many do. The kids class and the adult and teen class run back to back on weekday evenings, so parents and kids can train at the same academy on the same night.

Training at Tetris

What makes Tetris Jiu-Jitsu different?

We’re a family-owned academy led by Professor Helder Franklin Soares, who brings more than 30 years of martial arts, competition and refereeing experience. Classes are structured and beginner-friendly, and the academy is bright, clean and welcoming.

When are classes held?

Kids and adult classes run Monday to Friday evenings, with no classes on weekends. Members can see the full timetable in the students area, and we’ll help you pick a day when you book your free class.

Are drop-ins from other academies welcome?

Yes. Visiting grapplers from out of town are always welcome on the mat. Message or call us before you come so we can tell you which class fits.

Where are you located?

We’re on the second floor at 11951 International Dr, Suites 2A3 & 2A4, Orlando, FL 32821, serving Hunters Creek, Meadow Woods, Dr. Phillips, Kissimmee and the rest of southwest Orlando.
